Dating Safety

It is our goal at TamilStar.com to make sure that everyone’s experience is a happy and enjoyable one.

There are a few safety tips that everyone should keep in mind when dating online:

1. Don't give out personal details such as your name, phone number, address or a personal description to people you may correspond with on the Internet.

2. Choose your online identity wisely. If you are female and you don't want to invite sexual innuendo or the virtual equivalent of a whistle and an uninvited sexual reference, then choose a gender-neutral name. Of course, if your intention is to invite advances from men, then choose a feminine name, but be prepared for an onslaught of advances. This tip doesn't apply to women only, though, as the Web is full of very assertive women who will target certain nicknames of the male variety. By choosing a gender-neutral identity online, you afford yourself the option of revealing your gender identity (or more) when you're comfortable in doing so.

3. If you decide to make a date, never give personal details such as your address or surname. It is possible for address details to be obtained through your telephone number, so again be very guarded about giving out this information.

4. Always arrange to meet in a public place. Never meet them in a secluded area, parking lot or hotel room.

5. If possible, take a friend along, at least at the beginning, to meet your date and ask the friend to meet up with you again at a pre-arranged time. Work out a signal with your friend to indicate whether you would prefer that he or she stay with you.

6. Initially, don't go home with your date, invite them back to your home or accept a lift.

7. Never give out details of your financial situation. If someone asks you to give him or her this information, you should stop correspondence with him or her immediately.

8. If you're not with a friend, tell someone where you are going, who with (include the person's name, phone number and address) and when you'll be back.

9. Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy about someone, there may be a reason. Don't tell yourself you're being silly. If you don't feel comfortable, don't give them personal details about yourself and don't arrange a second date.

10. Be honest about your age, physical appearance and what you are looking for. Do not give your date a reason to be angry or disappointed.

11. Always stay alert and aware of your surroundings and your company. You should never drink alcohol in excess as it could impair your judgment.

12. Never forget your cell phone. Make sure you have it with you if at all possible at all times.
