Cine Interviews
Madhavan turns romantic now!

Feb 20, 2008, 15:02

Madhavan, who seems to be basking in the glory of his acclaimed hit ‘Evano Oruvan’, is all set to flag off the year with his brand new film ‘Vaazhthukal’. Also starring Bhavana, this film will be his Pongal offering of the year. In this interview, Madhavan joins us to share a bit about his latest film.

Your Vaazhthukal appears entirely different from Evano Oruvan. Share with us your experience of being a part of such unlike projects.

Both the films happened at different point of time. While Evano Oruvan was shot way back in 2006, I faced the camera for Vaazhthukal in July 2007. I hadn’t dabbled with my romantic side for long and hence decided to go for it.

So is your Vaazhthukal something like Alai Paayuthey?

(Grins) No, it’s more like Hum Aapke Hai Kaun. All sweet and sugary.

As compared to Evano Oruvan, this is widely contrasting. It is one commercial spicy potboiler with a good helping of songs, dance and drama. It was a bit difficult to get into a groovy mood after dabbling with a serious flick like Evano Oruvan. But once I settled for it, I just glided through.

Your last flick with Seeman was an out and out action drama. And now you are back with romance. Interesting.

Yes, we decided to come up with a romantic flick this time. That the film deals with not just the usual romance between a girl and a boy but also struggles to show the guys fondness for her family even though they do not approve of him, caught my fancy. And I immediately decided to go on with it.

How good is your rapport with Seeman?

After our numerous ventures together, today I count him more as a friend than anything else. He is a man of great conviction who holds the courage to follow his heart. An extreme fanatic of cinema, Seeman is one great technician as well as a gem of a person.

Brief us a bit more on your film and character.

I play this adorable, wealthy guy called Kathivaran how romances the idea of love. He is the kind of guy who strongly rues over missing his parents marriage and thus invites all the people who attended his parents’ wedding for yet another conjugal ceremony, just for some fun.

But when he finds out that one of his friends had skipped the ceremony, he goes out for him only to find that his friend’s parents are in an old age home since his friend’s wife object of them. This deeply affects him who since then feels afraid to tie the knot less something such happens to his parents too.

It’s when he come across a girl whom he feels aptly suited for him that he decides to get married. However he has to face strong opposition from the girl’s side.

How was it teaming up with Bhavana for the second time?

Bhavana is a very nice girl and a great performer on the top. However, I’m hurt by her decision to stay away from the promotional campaigns of the film.

What’s your take on the good response earned by your Evano Oruvan?

Well, to be honest, we knew from the very start that the film would attract niche audience. But we were simply overwhelmed to get such positive upshots from the critics as well as multiplex goers. I received a lot of mails citing how the character of Sridhar Vasudevan has inspired them.

The kind of comments this film fetched was rewarding. But I just wish that the film bucked up a bit more with its sales.

Do you feel that the popularity of Evano Oruvan will immortalize you as an actor?

I remember, once Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra said me that at least five of my films would go ahead of time and would be stored for long, like Alai Paayuthey, Kannathil Muthamittal, Anbe Sivam, Nala Damayanthi, Rang De Basanthi and Evano Oruvan.
